Qualified 7th from heats. Finished 9th at 2016 OG. Gold in 1948 is the Netherlands' only OG medal in this event. Bronze at 2021 World Relays Ch. Gold at 2016 European Ch. NED took part in the first Olympic Games to feature a women's 4x100m event, on home soil at the 1928 Games in Amsterdam. At the 2016 Games, they failed to progress beyond the heats. The Dutch team has never won a WCh medal.
Qualified 6th from heats. Bronze at 2004 OG is France's only OG medal in this event. Finished 10th at 2016 OG, 16th in 2012, DNF in 2008, 4th in 2000. Gold at 2003 WCh, silver in 2001 and 1999, bronze in 1997. In both 1984 and 1992 OG, France finished 4th and missed out on the podium by just 0.04s. The French team qualified for Tokyo by making the final at the 2021 World Relays Ch.

Germany caused an upset at the 2017 World Relays in Nassau by claiming victory ahead of favourites Jamaica. At the following edition in 2019 in Yokohama, they placed third behind the USA and Jamaica.

Silver at 2019, 2017 and 1983 WCh, bronze in 2013. Gold at 2018, 2014 European Ch. Their bronze medal-winning time at 2016 OG (41.77s) was the fastest for GBR at an Olympic, Commonwealth Games, world or European championship event.
Qualified 2nd from heats. Aiming for the third OG gold at consecutive Games, having won in 2016 and 2012. No other team has featured at as many Games or won as many medals in the event as USA. The team have contested the event at 19 Olympic Games and won 15 medals, including 11 golds. At the WCh, USA and their main rivals Jamaica have shared equally the last eight world championship titles.
Qualified 4th from heats. Finished 11th at 2016 OG, 13th in 2012. Placed 4th at 2019 WCh, 5th in 2017, 13th in 2015. Placed 7th at 2021 World Relays, 8th in 2015. SUI previously competed at the Games in 2016 and 2012, but did not qualify from their heat on either occasion. The team impressed at the 2019 WCh with a best-ever finish of fourth in the final, just 0.08s behind USA in bronze.
Qualified 5th from heats. Silver at 2016, 2012 and 2000 OG, gold in 2004, bronze in 1996. Gold at WCh in 2019, 2015, 2013, 2009 and 1991. Gold at 2014 and 2006 CWG. At London 2012 OG, Jamaica finished 0.59s behind USA, while in Rio a margin of 0.35s separated the two. Jamaica's sole Olympic gold came at Athens 2004, where they finished 0.54s ahead of the Russian Federation.

Gold at Asian Ch on four occasions and at Asian Games seven times. At the 2019 WCh in Doha, they looked to be in the running for their best-ever WCh finish until a mistake on the last baton exchange resulted in disqualification.
