Ghana contested the 4x100m relay at six consecutive OG from 1984 to 2004, and are returning for their seventh appearance in Tokyo. They have progressed from the heats just once, at the 1996 Games.

Silver at 2014 and 2012 European Ch, bronze in 2016 and 2010. Germany are yet to win a world championship medal and their best placing has been 4th (2015, 2013). Germany did not qualify for the final at the 2017 or 2019 editions.

At the 2019 WCh, Canada failed to make the final despite running the eighth-fastest time in the heats, ahead of the ninth-fastest USA team who qualified third from their heat and would go on to win gold in the final.
Qualified 1st from heats. Reigning Olympic champions, having claimed gold at both the 2016 and 2012 Games. Silver at 1984 OG. Gold at four consecutive WCh, from 2009 to 2015. At 2012 OG, they finished 0.20s ahead of runners-up USA, while at Rio 2016 they finished 0.33s ahead of surprise silver medallists Japan.

Gold at 2018, 2016 and 2014 European Ch. GBR are one of three 4x100m relay teams, alongside Jamaica and the Soviet Union, to have won two OG gold medals - only the dominant USA have claimed more.

CHN were disqualified in the final of the 2008 OG in Beijing. CHN were surprise medallists in front of a home crowd at the 2015 WCh in Beijing, where they finished third before being upgraded to silver after USA were disqualified.

At the world championships, since winning a silver medal in 1983 and bronze in 1995, Italy have struggled to reach the final. They finished 10th at the most recent edition in 2019. Finished 2nd behind South Africa at 2021 World Relays.

Japan set an Asian record of 37.60s in the final at the 2016 OG in Rio de Janeiro to finish 0.33s behind gold medallists Jamaica. Japan have made the final at the last five Olympic Games, and are appearing at their 12th Games in Tokyo.
