First GBR swimmer to win three golds at a single championship, finishing 1st in 50m and 100m breaststroke, and 4x100 mixed medley relay at 2015 WCh. Had a fear of water as a child.

Has said time differences have affected his fitness for international competitions and has focused on this for the 2020 OG. Had the Japanese flag on his bedroom door as a reminder of his ambition.

His hero is Japanese breaststroke swimmer Kosuke KITAJIMA.

He has a friendly rivalry with fellow British swimmer Adam PEATY (GBR): 'We're both competitive and push each other along.'

Plans to retire after Tokyo OG to begin master's degree in mathematical modelling and scientific computing at Oxford University in England.
