His mother made him learn to swim because she had fears of him drowning. Swam for UC Berkeley in the US in the 2019/20 season.

Qualified 6th from SF. Silver at 2016 OG. Gold at WCh in 2019 and 2017, 4th in 2015, 10th in 2013. Gold at 2016 and 2012 Asian Ch. Gold at 2018 Asian Games, silver in 2014. In other events - bronze in 4x100 mixed medley relay at 2017 WCh. He became the first male Chinese swimmer to win an OG medal in a backstroke event with his silver at Rio 2016.
Qualified 8th from SF. Finished 8th at 2016 OG. Placed 8th at 2019 WCh, 30th in 2015. Gold at 2021 European Ch, 4th in 2018 and 6th in 2016. He was one of his nation's flag bearers, along with rower Madalina BERES (ROU), for the opening ceremony for the Tokyo 2020 OG.
