His parents introduced him to several sports. 'For a few years I trained in badminton under the guidance of my mother, who is a badminton coach, but eventually I decided to focus on swimming.'

His grandfather Josif KAVALOV played football for Lokomotiv Plovdiv in Bulgaria.

In other events - bronze in 4x100m men's free relay at 2020 OG, 18th in 200m fly. He took up butterfly because he wanted to be closer to his friends during swim training in his youth, by making the medley relay team.
Qualified 8th from SF. Finished 19th at 2016 OG. Placed 21st at 2017 WCh, 25th in 2015. Silver at 2019 PanAm Games. In other events - 12th in 100m back and 50m free at 2015 PanAm Games. Was enrolled in swimming by his father. 'He signed me up only for me to learn how to swim the four strokes. Little by little I began having confidence in myself and I fell into competitive swimming.'
