Began competing for the University of Tennessee in USA in 20/21 season after his previous college, East Carolina University, suffered Covid-19 cutbacks. 'East Carolina University was stopping the [swimming] programme, so I had to transfer.'

Considered retiring after being unable to swim competitively for two months in 2020 when his sponsorship deal was terminated. 'I could see and feel people's support for me, so I wanted to return the favour.'
