His doctor encouraged him to try the sport as a form of rehabilitation due to a back problem caused by curvature of the spine.
Qualified 5th from SF. Bronze at 2019 WCh and gold at 2021 European Ch. In other events - silver in 4x200m free relay at 2019 WCh. Gold in 400m free and 4x200m free relay at 2021 European Ch. Finished 22nd in heats of 400m free at Tokyo 2020 OG. He started swimming at age seven after his mother sought to improve his health and physical fitness.
Qualified 3rd from SF. Finished 8th at 2019 WCh, 10th in 2017. Silver at 2018 European Ch, 4th in 2021. In other events - 13th in 400m free heats at 2020 OG. At 2016 OG, finished 21st in 200m back, 24th in 100m back. Was 4th in 400m free at 2019 WCh. Won 400m free at 2020 International Swimming League event in Budapest despite stopping at 350 metres when he believed the race had finished.
Qualified 1st from SF. Bronze at 2019 WCh, 4th in 2017. Gold at European Ch in 2018, silver in 2021. Bronze at 2018 CWG. Gold at 2015 European Games. In other events - silver in 4x100m medley relay, 4x200m free relay at 2016 OG, 5th in 100m free. Gold in 4x100m medley relay at 2019 WCh. First Scot to win six medals at a single Commonwealth Games with gold, silver and four bronze in 2018.
Qualified 2nd from SF. Finished 2nd at 2019 NCh. Won 2021 USA Olympic Trials. In other events - bronze in 400m free at 2020 OG. Swims for University of Florida Gators and believes his interest in open water events complements his competitiveness in the pool. He began swimming at age seven.
Qualified 4th from SF. Bronze at 2021 European Ch. Bronze at 2019 NCh. In 2019 Mare Nostrum, won at Barcelona and Canet-en-Roussillon. In other events - was 5th in 4x200m free relay at 2019 WCh, 11th in 200m IM. Gold in men's and mixed 4x100m, 4x200m free relay at 2021 European Ch. He contracted Covid-19 twice in 2020, which disrupted his training regimen. His idol is Michael PHELPS (USA).
Qualified 6th from SF. First-time Olympian. In other events - finished 18th in 4x200m free relay and 22nd in 4x100m free relay at 2019 WCh. His parents were keen swimmers and got him into the pool at age five. He was a flag bearer for Republic of Korea at Tokyo 2020 opening ceremony.
Qualified 8th from SF. Finished 9th at 2019 WCh. Won gold at 2019 PanAm Games and won at 2018 South American Ch. In other events - finished 7th in 4x200m free relay at 2019 WCh and won same event at 2019 PanAm Games. His brother Augusto SCHEFFER (BRA), who rowed at national level for Brazil, inspired him to take up swimming. His partner is fellow swimmer Gabriela CORDEIRO (BRA).
