A bout of glandular fever forced him to miss the 2015 WCh in Kazan, Russian Federation. Began swimming at age five after being encouraged by his mother. 'If you can dream it, you can do it.'

He has the most Olympic medals of any South African athlete.

Qualified 2nd from SF. Finished 13th at 2016 OG, 21st in 2012. Finished 7th at 2019 WCh, 14th in 2017, 9th in 2015, 8th in 2013. Gold at PanAm Games in 2019, 2015, 2011. Left out of BRA team for 2019 PanAm Games due to injury but was called up days before the Games when compatriot Gabriel SANTOS was suspended. He then won a third PanAm Games gold medal in the 200m butterfly.
Qualified 4th from SF. Finished 4th at 2019 WCh. Silver at 2021 European Ch, bronze in 2018. In other events - bronze in 4x100m medley relay at 2021 European Ch. He is currently enrolled at Northwestern University in the USA, where his brother Alessandro BURDISSO (ITA) also competed and studied.
Qualified 6th from SF. Finished 2nd at 2021 USA Olympic Trials. Placed 4th at 2017 NCh. In other events - bronze in 200m IM at 2015 PanAm Games, silver in 4x200m free relay. Won 200m IM at 2018 Barcelona Mare Nostrum. In early 2020 he expressed his wish to retire that year after the scheduled OG. 'I'm feeling every little ache and pain. I feel old, I really do.'
Qualified 8th from SF. Silver at 2019 Junior WCh and bronze at 2018 Junior PanPacific Ch. At 2019 Mare Nostrum, finished 3rd at Monaco. Placed 5th at Tokyo in 2019 WCup. Relaxes by watching baseball. Began swimming at age three after being influenced by his older brother. Admires Japanese swimmers Takeshi MATSUDA (JPN) and Daiya SETO (JPN).
